Welsh immigrants settled Churchtown and Bangor Episcopal Church was named for a church in Wales.
The original log church was built in 1720. A stone structure replaced it in 1754.
In 1830, the current church structure was built using richly colored native brown fieldstone and large corner quoins. Said to be one of the oldest Episcopal churches in the country, its churchyard dates from 1730.
Churchtown gets its name from the fact that many of the Bangor Episcopal Church-owned properties were leased to help support the church. Thus, the village was, literally, a church town.
